Goodwin's Theory

Goodwin's Theory

  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg. stage performance in rock video, dance routine)
  2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals
  3. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style)
  4. There is frequent reference to notions of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc..) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  5. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos, etc..)

Coldplay- Yellow
  • The music video does not present genre characteristics as it is a rock song but does not show any codes or conventions that lead the audience to think that it's a rock video. Therefore, this music video challenges this element of the theory.
  • The whole music video is following the singer with close ups in one shot.
  • The singer is lip syncing throughout the music video.
  • There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, for example:                                                      -"Look at the stars look how they shine for you": Meanwhile the visuals focus on the bright stars in the sky.                                                                                                                                         -"I swam across": He looks back at the sea on the beach before saying this.                                  -"I jumped for you": He says this after jogging playfully towards the camera                                 -"Look how they shine for you": When this quote appears in the lyrics, at this point the sky appears much lighter than at the beginning of the music video.
  • This video features moments in which there are close up shots on the singer as he lip sync's. This could be a way of emphasising him and putting the audience's attention towards him and maybe the lyrics he's singing as well. This could be a way of telling the audience that they need to pay attention to the meaning of the song.
  • This video represents 'breaking the fourth wall' when the lead singer looks straight into the camera for the majority. This is an aspect of 'Goodwin's Theory': 'Notions Of Looking'.
  • From my knowledge and what I noticed, I don't think there were any intertextual references during the music video.
