Music Set Texts
- The Vamps- Somebody To You ft. Demi Lovato
- Little Mix- Black Magic
- This video conforms to The Male Gaze theory when the girls reveal their bodies and dress up fighting over the guy.
- It also adheres to Goodwin's Theory from the voyeuristic treatment of the girl's bodies in the video.
- There is also a link between lyrics and visuals when they say "take a sip of your secret potion" indicating some sort of fantasy like theme, meanwhile the video displays them doing witch like magic around a spell book. This also adheres to Goodwin's Theory.
- Near the end of the music video, they also start dancing and lip syncing.
- This video also conforms to the Uses And Gratifications Theory because the group's nerdy characters at the beginning could be something for the younger female viewers to identify with. The narrative of this video shows that the girls are still beautiful and still 'get the guy' which can be a way to empower those viewers.
- Another way this adheres to The Uses And Gratifications Theory is the fact that many viewers probably use this music video as a form of escapism from all the magic and futuristic, or fantasy-like visual effects.
- I think this video gets many views and shares is because:... 1. To allow the narrative to sink in, it takes several watches, especially as when this music video first came out, viewers may be focusing more on the new song rather than the story of the video. 2. The fantasy theme caused from the magic shown in this text is a form of escapism (as mentioned above), therefore viewers may re-watch it when they're feeling down or want to gain the same feeling of imagining a different world. 3.
- This video adheres to Male Gaze Theory from the girls in the bikini's, especially when the boys in the band start looking at them as if they're also receiving some sort of enjoyment from looking at their bodies and long glamorous locks of hair.
- The girls also don't play much of an actual role in this video as they seem to be there just for posing, and looking beautiful and showing their bodies for the male viewer's pleasure and to therefore attract a larger audience.
- It adheres to Goodwin's theory because the video also demonstrates genre characteristics from the band playing their live instruments and lip syncing.
- The genre of the song is pop and the sub-genere could be pop-rock which leads me into thinking that the costumes conform to the sub-genre because of their leather jackets, black clothing, tight black jeans, jewellery, hair etc....
- Another way this music video adheres to Goodwin's theory is through Voyeurism as an aspect on 'Notions Of Looking'. As mentioned above, during a scene the members of the band look or 'check out' the attractive girls walking in, without wearing much. This can be an example of voyeurism because certain members of the audience may gain pleasure or enjoyment from looking at the beautiful girls, especially as many may not be interested in looking at the attractive members of the boy band.
- When the lyrics say "look at me now" the shots switch from each girl breaking the fourth wall and looking into the camera while posing. This is a clear cut, obvious sign of Goodwin's theory being applied accurately. This is not only because the lyrics are being represented visually as well, when the girls look into the camera, but also they're breaking the fourth wall and looking directly into the camera, on top of the fact that these attractive girls are there for members of the audience to gain pleasure from their appearance, which conforms to 'Voyeurism' of the sub-element 'Notions Of Looking'.
- There is also a link between lyrics and visuals in the lyrics when the singer breaks the fourth wall, and winks directly into the camera while lip syncing "and then you caught my eye". This adheres to Goodwin's theory of 'Notions Of Looking' and link between lyrics and visuals.
- This music video also proves 'The Uses And Gratifications Theory' accurate as it's used as a form of escapism, entertainment or just to fill time. The video adheres to the pop genre convention of being happy, bright, upbeat and easy to watch, which is why many members of the audience watch it to escape troubles or stress in their lives.
- I think this video gets many views and shares is because:... 1. The use of the girls being objectified through 'Voyeurism' can be appealing and or pleasurable for some members of the audience ton watch. 2. The video uses lots of fast cut editing which means that it can be difficult to pick up details in what;s happening at first watch. Which is why people re-watch it. 3.
This is great so far, but it needs completing please.
ReplyDeleteYou have considered the theories well.
Hi miss, I have completed this work to the best of my current ability, however I'm struggling to think of more reasons for why both music videos may get re-watched or shared.
