Representation In Music Videos

Any representation is a mixture of:

1. The thing itself.

2. The opinions of the people constructing the representation.  
Does the writer/ photographer/ presenter like the person or not?
3. The reaction of the individual to the representation.
Your personal reaction....
4. The context of the society in which the representation is taking place.
The place you live in and their social ideas.


Niki Minaj, bruno mars, justin bieber, taylor swift representation.



eg.....

  • Niki Minaj is shown wearing tight clothing, revealing bold outfits that exentuate her body  .. etc..                                                                                                                                                    -some people think this is an empowering representation to women                                             -some people think this representation is negative because it puts unrealistic expectations on women's appearance.
  • Justin Bieber was represented as a very cute, young, innocent boy during the time of his debut and beginning of his music career. Now he is shown as a bad boy, criminal, someone who has been in jail, a bad person, rude and disrespectful in the media despite lots of this probably being inaccurate or not fair on certain sides of these viral stories.                                                 -This 'bad boy' representation can be appealing for some members of the audience (especially when being shown in music videos or videos of performances.                                                     -This criminal representation can cause many people to 'dislike', unfollow or 'hate' him.            This view can also apply to parents who hear these stories in the media or through word of mouth, and therefore discourage their children from supporting his career or idolising him.

Star Image


  • A star's image becomes a readily recognised sign that is used in many different media forms.
  • Stars can use the fact that their image has meaning by allowing it to be used for advertising purposes.
  • A pop star is a manufactured image and does not correlate to the person's personality behind the image.
eg. harvey winestein... respected in the media until female celebrities have come out and told the world what he did to them.

Front Cover Analysis The 'Top Pops' magazine's main image is of Rita Ora. She's a famous pop singer, so her presence in this magazine come's to no surprise. The photo is a close up of her upper body to her face; however most of her body is covered by text or other images making her face the most clear and emphasised part of her body.
