One reason radio producers target different audiences is to give representation to people of all races, genders and ethnic minorities. An example of this taking place in the bbc is the fact that the presenter of  Radio 1 live lounge happens to be Clara Amfo, who is an african woman. Being the presenter of such a popular radio programme is a huge achievement, and so representing such a senior role as a black female gives subdominant representation. Therefore, the programme most likely gains a new audience of girls, and black people since they may feel like they're able to associate their identity more with the celebrities they look up to.

Radio 1 live lounge also targets different audiences by including a huge range of music genres on the programme. These include: pop, rock, indie, hiphop and all their subgenres. This appeals to so many different audiences, as each genre has their own audience, and loyal listeners. This contrasts greatly with radio 3, which only plays subgenres of music within classical music. This contrastingly targets a much more niche audience compared to livelounge.

Explain how radio1 live lounge appeals to artists and listeners (5)

Live lounge appeals to music artists by providing a platform for them, giving a huge audience accessibility to their work. This appeals to the artist because going on a programme like this can allow for listeners who enjoy their music to then listen to more of the artists music, buy concert tickets and merchandise. Overall this provides more royalties, opportunities and income for the artist.

Live lounge appeals to listeners by providing representation of people the listeners may identify with. This can include people of ethnic minorities. According to the uses and gratifications theory, a reason a listener of an ethnic minority may find the content appealing is by personal identity, and being able to associate with the celebrity on the programme.
