Goodwin's Theory

Image
Goodwin's Theory Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg. stage performance in rock video, dance routine) There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style) There is frequent reference to notions of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc..) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos, etc..) Coldplay- Yellow The music video does not present genre characteristics as it is a rock song but does not show any codes or conventions that lead the audience to think that it's a rock video. Therefore, this music video challenges this element of the theory.  The whole music video is following the singer with close ups in one shot. The singer is lip syncing throughout the music video. The...

Camera Work and Editing In Music Videos

Image
Camera Work and Editing In Music Videos Camera Work As with any image text, how the camera is used and how images are sequenced will have a significant impact upon meaning. Camera shots and angles will create meanings for the audience of a music video and can be used to emphasise messages in the song or suggest qualities in the performer. Editing Though the most common form of editing associated with the music promo is fast cut montage, which makes many of the images impossible to grasp on first viewing (thus ensuring multiple viewing), there are videos which use slow pace and gentler transitions to establish mood. This is particularly apparent for the work of many female solo artists with a broad audience appeal, such as 'Adele'. 1. H ow many shots on average are there in a music video?     It depends on the style and genre. between 1 and hundreds 2. How long do you think the average shot length is for a music video?     0.3 - 5 second...

Purpose And Styles Of Music Videos

Image
Purpose And Styles Of Music Videos Music Videos are an important promotional tool for marketing performers and their music. They help to create the 'star image' for a new performer (EG. Lana Del Ray) They adapt or develop the image of a more established artist (Eg. Rihanna) Music Videos are used to interpret and anchor the meaning of a song and to entertain the audience. Iconography indicates the genre of music and the style of the performer. Different Styles -Performance : One Direction- what makes you beautiful/ Lady gaga- telephone?     ( close ups of the performer, direct address to engage the audience, different outfits. -Narrative: Katy Perry- thinking of you/ david guetta- titanium  (A story is created, sometimes the lyrics don't match the visuals at all. Sometimes the artist doesn't feature at all and there are just actors. Enigma codes. -Conceptual: They are based around an idea or image e.g. lady gaga 'bloody mary'...

conventions of music videos

Image
Conventions Of Music Videos Videos may use linear narratives telling the story of the song or performance montages to draw attention to the song or the performers   Videos may use contrasting settings and associated lighting – location or studio or in performance, urban or rural, exotic or everyday, to match the style of music and the musician’s image   Videos may use contrasting camerawork and editing to create a tone to match the song and the musician(s), by creating documentary style naturalism or a more stylised performance, for example   Videos may use only the music track as soundtrack or may add diegetic elements to help create a self-contained fictional world   Any other valid contrasting media language   Narratives   Mise–en-scene: Costumes, facial expressions, props Different camerawork and/or editing TGIF This music video adheres to the pop conventions of having a narrative to draw attention to Katy Perry's ...

'Goodwin's Theory Of Music Videos'

In what ways can 'Goodwin's Theory Of Music Videos' be applied to 'Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk ft. Bruno Mars'? There are several elements of Goodwin's theory found in the 'Uptown Funk' music video. One being notions of looking. Elements of objectification and voyeurism are found when the focus of the video is put upon women's legs before their faces are shown.  This is conforming to the elements of objectification because they're being reduced to their legs and not as a person. This is also a form of voyeurism as members of the audience may find pleasure from looking at women's legs (especially as their objectification is also sexualising them). Therefore, the 'Notions Of Looking' part of Goodwin's theory applies to this music video. Conventions such as 70's/80's style suits, sunglasses, camera angles like when the men are being looked up at and 'Michael Jackson' inspired dancing represent this music video as...

Music Videos

Image
Music Videos A music video is usually a short film or video that accompanies a piece of music. Modern music videos are primarily used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings (which is why they're sometimes called 'promotional videos' or 'promos' One of my favourite music videos is of a song called 'Shangri La' by a korean boy group named 'Vixx'. I love this music video for the props, themes, mystery, symbolism and overall aesthetic. The music video makes many references to Adam and Eve and the garden of eden without a particularly obvious storyline. Many fans of 'Vixx' across the world have posted blogs of their personal interpretations on the music video and what they perceive as the symbolism. The mystery of the symbolism behind this music video has made it very successful around the world within the kpop loving community. Every time you watch it, you notice something different, which is why people...
